DCC CONTROLLERS

Choosing the correct DCC controller for your layout is essential. One topic often not discussed is the output voltage of the controller. Larger gauges require a higher voltage. Higher voltages on smaller gauges can often lead to decoder failure, so it is essentially to get a controller with the correct output voltage for your gauge. A higher voltage is an advantage as it reduces the current and volt drop through the drop wire and track and therefore resistance of rail and cable joints is less likly to be a problem.

Typical output voltage range requirements for each gauge:

N Gauge 13-15V, OO Gauge 13-16V, O Gauge 16-21V.

The Nce Powercab puts out 13.8V as standard which is a bit low for O Gauge, but will work fairly well for one small O gauge loco. For multiple locos on OO and O gauge the ESU Command station has up to 5A at 21V output. The output is also adjustable from 14 to 21V to cater for all gauges.
