Most modern electronic designs make extensive use of microcontroller integrated circuits, or PIC chips to use the trade name. These programmable devices allow highly complex functions to be manufactured with just a handful of components. Programming of these devices, known in the trade as embedded programming, was a slow and cumbersome process using assembler language; however we now program in the “C” language which speeds up the development process considerably and can therefore reduce development cost and time to market. LCD displays, can be interfaced with the microcontroller, to show various information and menus. PIC microchips have built in A to D functions to read analogue voltages to allow control of traditional analogue functions as well as digital.
